About Stress and Burn Out Syndrome
The UK is facing an epidemic of stress related illness and burn out syndrome. The Health and Safety Executive in the UK estimate that about half a million people in the UK experience stress at a level they believe is making them ill and that up to five million people feel 'extremely' stressed by their work. While some stress is positive and inspires motivation, excessive stress undermines performance, is costly to employers and can make people ill.
Too much stress factors into either exacerbating existing health complaints or being the cause of many others. Left to its own devices, excessive stress can rapidly develop into ‘burn out syndrome’, a state of physical and mental exhaustion. Does your stress get too much at times?

Everybody reacts differently to stress. But how well you cope with stress – physical,
mental or emotional – depends on three things. These are 1. your mindset 2. your
nervous system and 3. your adrenal glands. If you find yourself experiencing some
of the symptoms of the burn out profile (see inside cover) too often chances are you will need to make some adjustments in these three areas to bring things back into
balance. This brings your response to stress back under your control.
