Weight Gain
Weight gain can result from increased muscle mass through exercise, or increased storage of calories as fat. While lean body mass is considered favorable and is associated with several health benefits, a gain in body fat is generally more troubling. When fat gain increases to the point of obesity (body mass index of greater than 30), risk is significantly increased for a number of disorders, such as insulin resistance, hormone balance, Type-2 Diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Besides diet and physical activity, a variety of physiological dysfunctions may be at play
For example, stress can make you fat. Why? Cortisol is the body's primary stress hormone and is linked to a number of health problems - including obesity. Chronic or long term stress raises cortisol levels and this leads to weight gain. Yet this key hormone and its proper management is almost completely ignored in most diets.
Stress leads to weight gain primarily because of cortisol, the body's main stress hormone. When we are under continual stress, the amount of cortisol circulating n the blood stays elevated. Cortisol acts as a potent signal to the brain to increase appetite and cravings for certain foods, especially carbohydrates and fats because of their high calorie levels.
Cortisol also acts a a signal to our fat cells to hold on to as much fat as they can and to release as little fat as possible even in the face our our repeated attempts to reduce calorie intake for weight loss. If that wasn't already bad enough for our weight loss efforts, cortisol also slows the body's metabolic rate by blocking the effects of many of our most important metabolic hormones including insulin (so blood sugar levels suffer and carb cravings take over), serotinin (so we feel fatigued and depressed) and the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen so rarely feel "in the mood" when we are stressed out and awash with cortisol.
Clinical studies from Yale University, the University of Miami, the University of California, the University of Connecticut, the University of Chicago and many others around the world have shown that lowering stress levels and returning cortisol levels to normal can reduce body-fat levels, control blood pressure, improve insulin sensitivity, balance blood sugar levels and control appetite.
If you struggle to lose weight or get down to your target weight only for the weight to return, discovering how to manage stress and your cortisol levels through nutrition is essential learning.
In this weight management program you will learn how to use food and dietary supplements to control cortisol, blood sugar and how many calories you burn.
Requirements For Success
- attendance at our one hour seminar entitled "Nutrition In Health & Disease"
(max 6 people)
summary : the average British diet is riddled with refined, processed, chemicalized, demineralized, devitalized "food." What nature has set on our table has been replaced with man's own version of "improvement." Unfortunately, as Dr Royal Lee once pointed out, "the human body cannot make something out of nothing and, regardless of their appealing taste, long shelf life and easy availability, the use of such foods causes the human body to disintegrate."
This seminar discusses the function of the human body and its nutritional requirements
for optimal physical and mental well being, body composition and weight. Topics include the 7 principles of weight management ( see above )
Seminar Leader : Alan Lee
Alan Lee is a member of The Royal Society of Medicine, The Biochemical Society and The International Foundation For Nutrition and Health.
